The next day we managed to hook up with the rest of our tour group in
Hotel Mopan, which turned out to be darn fine, save for the water
pressure. The city had come more alive, but we spent most of our time
playing bridge in the hotel bar.
The next morning we took off for Placencia by way of the Belize Zoo.
The zoo was great; it seemed darn close to perfect. The only animals
there were animals that had been either hurt in the wild and nursed
back to health, or confiscated as pets, or found as infants. When
possible they are released back into the wild. The zoo was filled
with pro-creature friendly messages and was one of the most pleasant
zoos I've been to.
Here's a gecko. While it was in the technically in the zoo, really,
they were all over the place. Lois quickly got sick of my pointing
them out. I guess growing up in Bangkok inured her to this sort of
thing, but I found them fascinating.
Here's a silhouette of a spider monkey.
Tapirs were pretty neat animals, though quite smelly.
Lois was particularly fond of the pigs.
A howler monkey stretches.
This is a theoretically great shot of me making the same frowning face
the howler has behind me, except that you can't make his out. Darn.
